Search for Relevant Scholarships

Many students want to attend one of the best colleges, but their parents have been unable to save enough money to ensure they can attend the college of their choice. However, that doesn’t mean it’s an impossible dream to attend the college of your dreams. It does take more effort to find scholarships that can make up any shortfall in funds for school but it’s worth it in the end.

The first and best place to begin on your list of places to look is at your chosen college. If you have already been accepted at a school and do not have adequate funds for tuition, books, and living expenses, then it’s time to meet with the financial aid officer at the college. Often, colleges can help students with funds that fill the gaps left by other types of aid.

Another important place to look for scholarship and grant money is with your state government. This is especially true if you are entering the freshman year of your bachelor's program. For example, the state of California offers a program called Cal Grant. These scholarships are for undergraduate students, those in vocational programs, and students pursuing a teaching credential. New York offers free tuition at their two- and four-year colleges for residents of the state whose families earn less than $125,000 per year. Some states, including Oregon, Arkansas, Indiana, and Minnesota offer free tuition for residents at their two-year community colleges.

Thus, the best advice is to begin with your state and your school first as you search for scholarship money. If you are looking for either student loans or scholarships, you will also need to fill out the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) because it contains metrics that allow school financial aid officers to determine how much you and your family can afford and how much additional aid may be available to help you with your college degree program.

Scholarships for College-Bound, High School Seniors

A great source of scholarship money for families looking for college funds may be their own employer(s). Many companies offer scholarships for their employees or their children, but it may not be common knowledge. It pays, literally and figuratively, for parents to take the time and ask their human resources liaison if such scholarships exist. This is especially true if you work for a larger corporation or a more established company.

Once the graduating senior has been accepted at a particular college, they need to meet with a financial aid officer at the school to find out what scholarship resources the school may have to offer in an effort to help the student pay for their college tuition. Often, schools can cover some of the remaining cost or recommend the student for a scholarship.

One other big tip is not to forget to find out what scholarship or grant programs are offered by your state to graduating high school seniors. For example, California has a grant program that covers an entire four-year program and is need based. Also, the Federal Pell Grant programs are a need-based financial aid program.

The following is a list of some other sources of scholarships for college-bound, high school seniors:

General MBA Scholarships

MBA scholarships help pay the sometimes very high costs of graduate education. General MBA scholarships are those that do not have specific limitations, beneficiaries, or purposes. General scholarships are open to all students and do not restrict or limit eligibility to favor some particular group. They do not have to go to the best GPAs or standardized test scores and are not meant to increase diversity in the field. These scholarships are an excellent source of funding for every student, and every student should reach out for them to fill their needs for financial help with tuition, fees, housing, and living expenses.

The graduate business school in which the student intends to enroll can be a source of general scholarships. Some business schools are part of well-endowed universities and colleges with long-traditions of public and private support. Other schools may be relatively new and offer alternative forms of scholarship aid. As a guide to selecting business programs, the student can research the levels of financial aid provided to students in previous years.

Applicants must consider merit-based and needs-based scholarships. Many national scholarships and fellowships offer large amounts of aid. Too often, potential applicants shy away from these awards, perhaps believing they could never compete or meet the level of required excellence. However, you should allow the faculty or panel who review the application and info received to make that decision. Don't skip a possible source of funds because of uncertainty. Explore all your options.

MBA Scholarships for Minorities

Minorities are defined as members of certain race or ethnic group, and they may also be defined in terms of under-represented groups. When pursuing scholarships based on minority status, it is important to look carefully at the definition of the intended beneficiaries. While scholarships may focus on minority group status, they also look to reward the most promising students. These classes of scholarship also look at financial need as a factor with considerable weight.

Because many minority-focused scholarships seek to benefit minority communities, the selection process tends to reward applicants that in turn have engaged their communities and demonstrated a willingness to participate and contribute to community improvement. The MBA is a powerful tool for progress in minority communities, both in social and economic terms. Reflecting the purposes of the scholarship is an excellent method for improving opportunities for success.

Scholarships for Women and Women in STEM

Scholarships for women in science and technology fields come from a wide range of sources. Public and private employers seek to address two broad problems. First, the US rates lower than many other advanced nations in producing highly qualified science graduates at the college and post-graduate levels. Second, women have traditionally had fewer opportunities to study in STEM fields and national educational policy seeks to remedy that gap.

Women scholarships for science-focused studies are competitive, need-based, and sometimes specifically aimed at particular groups of female applicants. For example, some scholarships address women with gaps in their education, other awards seek to support women in subject areas of particularly low participation.

Typical qualifications include the minimum education of a high school diploma or applicants about to enter college. Most awards ask for high GPAs both for high school applicants and those enrolled in college or graduate programs. Competitive awards seek students with high scores on the ACT or SAT, and many programs ask for essays that demonstrate the applicant’s commitment to education and a career in a science discipline.

Science Scholarships for Women

STEM has a very specific meaning in the sciences. It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The term science in the STEM grouping describes one of the classes of science study. In STEM, science refers to the natural sciences of biology, physics, chemistry, etc. Another grouping is social science, but that may be classed as humanities studies.

Science has some mixed categories such as biochemistry, nuclear physics, plant biology, and molecular biology. STEM seeks to reflect real-world applications of sciences such as the intersection of computer science and engineering, or computer engineering. Overall, students can qualify for science awards with college majors in physics, biology, and chemistry.

Technology Scholarships for Women

In the STEM education program, technology covers a broad range of studies. Technology covers many of the traditional fields that have changed with the addition of computers, information systems, and electronic engineering. STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to education that integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into a cohesive design. Technology studies have emerged from innovation and invention. For example, engineering was applied to aerospace, computer development, and geospatial processes. In the process, traditional engineering grew into many specialties or sub-fields.

Technology is not a simple term; it has broad meanings and many uses. Nearly everyone agrees that technology includes topics such as computer programming, data analytics, and computer design. STEM intentionally blurs the distinctions between fields of science, and it integrates learning by stressing practical applications of STEM areas.

Engineering Scholarships for Women

The field of engineering includes a wide range of fields of study and career practice; they include structural mechanical, electrical, aviation, and computer engineering. Engineering affects nearly everyone in the world. Nearly every human endeavor involves engineering, from transportation, clean water, food production, and the electronic marvels of the computer age. Women do not participate in the engineering professions in numbers that reflect their overall participation in the workforce. Governments, private companies, and other employers have invested millions of dollars to support higher participation by women.

Typical engineering scholarships for women require high GPAs, a solid base of math and science studies, and a commitment to engineering education, and a career in an engineering related field. While nearly every area of engineering seeks female candidates, the impact of computer engineering on the modern world puts special emphasis on this field of engineering among advocates for women’s engineering education.

Other Science Fields

STEM is a dominant force in education policy in the US and globally. Many education policy makers acknowledge that there may be reasons to broaden STEM to include a greater emphasis on social sciences. Many social science disciplines have rigorous requirements for mathematics, mathematical analysis, statistics, and/or logic.

Education policy makers sometimes refer to the amended STEM concept as STEAM. The A stands for Arts and Humanities. STEM or STEAM have identical goals; namely, to prepare a generation of students for the challenges and opportunities they will likely face. STEAM accepts the reality that focusing on the “hard” sciences can leave critical gaps in the leadership and workforce of the future.
